Our Assessment: Smith & Wesson’s Model 41 has long stood as the company’s flagship rimfire target pistol, purpose-built from the outset for precision competition. Introduced in the late 1950s and refined through the following decades, the Model 41 earned an enduring reputation for exceptional trigger quality, balance, and inherent accuracy. By the late 1980s, production examples like this one benefited from mature manufacturing processes while retaining the classic design elements that made the model a mainstay on bullseye firing lines, collegiate teams, and serious target ranges across the country. The 7-inch barrel configuration in particular emphasizes sight radius and stability, hallmarks of the Model 41’s competition pedigree.
This circa-1988 example is outstanding, retaining approximately 99% of its original blue finish with little to no visible operational wear. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling, rated a full 10/10, and the trigger is characteristically light and crisp. The checkered target grips with ambidextrous thumb shelves remain excellent, and the pistol includes its factory box, paperwork, and magazine. As a near-pristine late-1980s Model 41, this pistol represents one of the finest American-made rimfire target handguns ever produced and remains highly desirable to both collectors and precision shooters.
