Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The right side of the barrel is marked “S.&W.357 MAGNUM”. The right side of the frame is marked with a Marcas Registradas. The left side of the frame is marked with a S&W Monogram. The crane cut is marked with the serial and model. The crane is marked inspection proofs.
Barrel Length: 2.5” Full lug, Ribbed
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with a red insert and is set on a serrated elevated base that is integral to the rib, which is serrated for glare reduction. The rear sight is a black S&W micrometer click, flat top, square notched leaf that is adjustable for windage and elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered rubber overmolded Pachmayr “Gripper” grips with Pachmayr medallions. There are light handling marks. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition.
Type of Finish: Stainless Steel
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: The balance of the stainless shows operational and handling wear. There are a few little scuffs and rubs. There are a few light handling marks and draglines. There is a crisp turn line on the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces light side-to-side movement with the trigger depressed. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 686 has been made in a variety of configurations since 1980 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .357 Magnum revolver. This example is the 686-1 with a 2.5? barrel, round butt grip frame, fluted cylinder, Stainless classic finish, but most notably is chambered for 6, .357 Magnum Rounds.
