Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The left side of the frame is marked with a S&W trade mark. The right side of the frame is marked with a 4-line Marcas Registradas. The rear of the cylinder is marked “V”. The inside of the ejector housing is marked “S”. The crane cut is marked “BPW1723 / MOD.627-0” and “TAI MINOT, ND”. The crane is marked “017” over an “S”.
Barrel Length: 5 ½” Full lug.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with a red insert pinned to a ramped base integral to the barrel rib. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched leaf in a base that is micrometer click adjustable for windage and elevation. The top of the frame, rib, and rear sight base is checkered for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece wood with finger grooves and S&W medallions at their tops. There are a few scattered handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips rate in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There are gouges on both sides of the bore toward the muzzle. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10
Overall Condition: The balance of the finish shows light handling and operational wear. There is a crisp turn line on the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Good condition given the condition of the bore.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces very light side-to-side movement with the trigger depressed. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 627 traces its lineage directly to the legendary N-frame .357 Magnum revolvers that defined the company’s pre-war and post-war prestige offerings, most notably the Registered Magnum and later Model 27. Introduced in stainless steel as the Model 627, this revolver carried forward that same premium DNA while offering increased corrosion resistance and a modernized finish. The 627-0 variant, produced in the early 1990s, represents the first engineering iteration and reflects Smith & Wesson’s effort to blend classic N-frame proportions with contemporary materials and manufacturing practices. The 5½-inch full-lug barrel configuration is particularly appealing, balancing sight radius, weight, and handling in a way that echoes earlier deluxe magnum revolvers.
This example presents with light external wear consistent with use, crisp markings, and excellent mechanical behavior, including a smooth double-action pull and clean single-action break. The stainless finish shows typical handling marks and a defined cylinder turn line, while the factory wood stocks remain attractive and intact. The primary condition consideration is the bore, which shows noticeable gouging near the muzzle and rates 6/10, a factor that places this revolver more in the category of a shooter or collection piece with noted internal wear rather than a pristine example. Even so, as an early Model 627 with classic N-frame styling, adjustable sights, and strong mechanical integrity, it remains a compelling representation of Smith & Wesson’s stainless magnum evolution during the late 20th century.
