Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” and the right side of the barrel is marked “38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG.”. The yoke cut and crane are marked “55415”. The butt is marked with the serial number. The left side of the frame has a small trade mark S&W logo and the frame’s right side is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”. The rear face of the cylinder is marked “645645” and the front face of the ejector is marked “645645”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “B” and “645645” above the ejector. The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. / PATENTED FEB. 6, 06. SEPT. 14, 09. DEC. 29, 14”. The rear face of the crane is marked with the serial number. The interior of the right grip panel is stamped with the serial number. The rear of the trigger and hammer are both marked “REG. U.S. PAT. OFF”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an red insert ramped blade pinned to a base forged to the barrel that appears aftermarket. The rear sight is an adjustable square notch leaf in a base that is screw adjustable for windage and elevation and flush with the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut stocks with S&W medallions, smooth borders, and smooth diamonds around the grip screw escutcheons. There are some little dings, draglines, and scuff. The most noticeable defects are on the bottoms. The checkering is strong with minimal wear. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is strong with very light edge wear. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 92% of its metal finish. The grip frame has some surface oxidation and light surface erosion on the sides under the grips, heavier on the right side. The barrel displays some little nicks and scuffs, mainly towards the front. The sides of the barrel at the muzzle have some finish loss. The edges display some thinning. The cylinder has a dragline that has partially thinned the finish and partially gone through it, there is a little speck of oxidation in front of one of the timing notches. The butt of the grip frame has a small spot of oxidation and there is another on the sideplate. There are some handling marks and faint draglines from use and storage. The screw heads are tool marked with serviceable slots. The markings are clear though some are rounded and shallow due to wear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up well on each chamber with barely perceptible movement. The single action trigger is crisp and the double action is smooth. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
