Our Assessment:
The Smith & Wesson Performance Center 460 XVR stands at the pinnacle of modern revolver design—an unmistakable powerhouse purpose-built for long-range handgun hunting. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the .460 S&W Magnum cartridge was developed to deliver extraordinary velocity and energy while maintaining versatility with the ability to fire shorter .454 Casull and .45 Colt rounds. This revolver, with its 10.5″ heavy barrel and integral compensator, exemplifies the Performance Center’s mission: to extract every ounce of precision and power from the platform.
The revolver’s design combines brute strength and refinement—its massive X-frame is engineered to withstand extreme chamber pressures, while the Bushnell variable-power optic provides a clear advantage in long-range field applications. The compensator tames recoil effectively, and the Hogue grip ensures the shooter maintains control even with the cartridge’s significant power.
This example remains in excellent mechanical condition with a near-perfect bore and high finish retention. Whether appreciated as one of the most capable hunting revolvers ever built or as a top-tier example of Performance Center craftsmanship, this .460 S&W Magnum is an impressive addition to any serious collection. We are no longer offering layaway. KF
