The yoke cut is marked with the model and dash “MOD 696-1”. The serial number is marked on the butt of the grip frame, “CCP9762”.
Sights / Optics:
The front sight is a serrated ramp with an orange insert. The rear sight is a Smith & Wesson micrometer click adjustable square notch in a base pinned to the topstrap. There is a small dent on the front sight blade, which appears to be the only visible damage on this revolver.
Stock Configuration & Condition:
This revolver comes with three sets of grips. Installed is a pair of smooth Goncalo Alves presentation stocks with a speedloader cut. Also included are a pair of checkered black rubber grips with finger grooves and a pair of checkered rosewood target grips made by Altamont Grip Co. All grips rate in Excellent condition with only minor handling wear.
Type of Finish: Stainless Steel
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition:
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only a trace of light powder fouling in the grooves. There is no visible erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.8/10.
Overall Condition:
This revolver retains over 98% of its original stainless finish. There are a few faint handling marks and a minor dent in the front sight, but no evidence of cylinder burn rings or significant use. The chambers show only light powder flecks, and the revolver appears to have spent most of its life stored in the box. The action is slightly stiff due to a lack of recent lubrication and would benefit from a light oiling, especially around the cylinder latch and rotation. The smooth-faced trigger and knurled hammer are intact and correct. The box included is not original to this revolver; the factory label has been replaced with a replica sticker. The information on the label is correct, but it was not printed or applied by Smith & Wesson.
Mechanics:
The action functions correctly in both single and double action. The lock-up is tight with minimal play. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories:
This revolver includes a blue S&W box with a replaced label, factory paperwork, and three sets of grips as described.
Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson 696-1 is a prized example of practical elegance and rugged performance. Chambered in the classic .44 Special and built on the strong L-frame, this revolver delivers ideal proportions for balance, controllability, and carry comfort. Its 3″ barrel provides quick handling while still extracting maximum performance from this time-honored cartridge.
This is a desirable Pre-Lock model, produced in 1998 before the introduction of S&W’s internal locking system—a feature collectors and shooters alike value for its clean aesthetic and traditional function. The stainless steel finish is beautifully preserved, and the bore remains bright and sharp, offering outstanding performance potential for those who shoot what they collect.
Versatility is another hallmark of this offering. Included are three distinct grip options to tailor the revolver to your needs and style: smooth Goncalo Alves presentation stocks, finger-grooved rubber combat grips, and striking Altamont rosewood target panels. Whether you’re setting it up for trail carry, range time, or display, this 696-1 is ready to impress.
Discontinued and increasingly hard to find, especially in this condition, the 696-1 stands as one of Smith & Wesson’s most sought-after modern classics. The serial number prefix “CCP” practically spells out “Concealed Carry Permit,” a fun coincidence for a revolver that feels made for exactly that role. Bid confidently—this one is ready for action or admiration. Be sure to view the high-resolution photos for a detailed look. Good luck! – K.F.
