Mechanics:
The action functions correctly in both double- and single-action. Timing and lock-up feel proper, the cylinder stop engages positively, and the hammer and trigger are the wide target-style parts (smooth-face trigger, checkered wide hammer). We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:
None included beyond what is shown with the revolver itself.

Our Assessment:
Introduced in the late 1980s, Smith & Wesson’s stainless N-frame Model 657 brought the excellent .41 Magnum into a corrosion-resistant, field-ready package. The -5 engineering change modernized internals while keeping the classic N-frame handling and S&W’s excellent adjustable sighting system. The .41 Magnum, developed in the 1960s as a bridge between the .357 and .44 Magnums, earned a reputation for flat trajectory and strong terminal performance with manageable recoil in a heavy frame.

This 2008-dated 657-5 sports the scarce non-fluted cylinder and a long 7.5″ full-lug barrel—features that add sight radius, forward balance, and a distinctive look. Condition is strong overall with crisp mechanics and an outstanding 9.8/10 bore, ideal for accuracy with jacketed or hard-cast loads. Stainless construction keeps maintenance simple, and the factory S&W rubber monogrip provides secure purchase for magnum work. A handsome, capable .41 Magnum N-frame that blends collectability with practical performance.
