Bore Condition: The bore is bright and mirror with sharp rifling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver shows minimal evidence of use. There are a few light handling marks and faint rotation lines on the cylinder, but no notable dings or distractions. Edges remain crisp and the stainless finish presents very well. In this writer’s opinion, the revolver rates about 97%+ overall finish retained.
Mechanics: The action operates correctly in both double and single action. Timing and lockup feel solid; the trigger is the smooth, wide type and the hammer is wide with knurling. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with its serial matching factory box with cleaning kit and factory box.
Our Assessment: Introduced in the mid-1980s, the stainless Model 657 is the corrosion-resistant counterpart to Smith & Wesson’s Model 57—both N-frame revolvers chambered for the .41 Magnum. The .41 Magnum cartridge itself debuted in the 1960s to split the difference between the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, offering a flatter trajectory and strong terminal performance with less recoil than the .44 in similarly weighted guns. The 657 quickly earned favor with hunters and silhouette shooters for its durability and weather resistance.
This 6″ example has the classic target features—smooth wide trigger, wide knurled hammer, and fully adjustable rear sight—with a pinned ramp front. The satin stainless finish remains very strong and the bore is essentially perfect at 10/10. Wearing a practical Hogue MonoGrip, it’s a clean, late-’80s 657 that presents the model exactly as enthusiasts like to find them: honest light handling, excellent mechanics, and ready for the next owner to appreciate. We are no longer offering layaway. KF
