Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 544 “Texas Wagon Train Commemorative” is a unique and historically rich revolver produced in 1986 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Texas Independence. Chambered in .44-40 Winchester, a cartridge with deep cowboy-era roots, this model was built on the square-butt N-frame and features a forged 5″ barrel, micrometer-adjustable rear sight, and finely fit walnut presentation grips. What truly sets it apart is the commemorative rollmark on the right side plate featuring the Texas state outline with a covered wagon inside, and matching “1836–1986” date stamps on the barrel and frame. The red ramp front sight, target hammer and trigger, and robust frame construction round out a revolver that is not only commemorative in theme but practical in design.

Only 4,782 of these were ever produced, making this example particularly collectible—especially in this condition. It retains 99% of its original finish with only minor handling wear and a faint cylinder line. The bore is outstanding, the action is mechanically sound, and it comes with its factory presentation case featuring a blue felt interior and fitted compartments. Whether you’re a Texas history enthusiast, S&W collector, or just someone drawn to unusual chamberings in premium revolvers, the Model 544 is a scarce and handsome addition to any collection. Please see our pictures and good luck on your Texas size bid!  -N.P.
