Our Assessment:
The Smith & Wesson Model 51 was produced from 1969 to 1971 and was designed as a high-quality, small-frame revolver chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 MRF). Built on the J-frame and marketed toward outdoorsmen, ranchers, and trappers, the Model 51 offered a flat-shooting cartridge and the robust construction typical of Smith & Wesson’s mid-century revolvers. It was one of the earliest handguns chambered in .22 Magnum, predating widespread use of the round in compact firearms and standing out for its accuracy and reliability.
This particular revolver, serial number M14579, is an excellent late-1960s example. The blued finish retains strong luster with only a faint drag line on the cylinder, while the pinned barrel and recessed chambers confirm it as a desirable early configuration. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, and the action operates smoothly in both single and double action. Included are the matching-labeled factory box and original paperwork, completing a package that highlights both preservation and provenance.
With its quality build, factory accessories, and chambering that bridges the rimfire and centerfire worlds, this Model 51 stands as a fine representation of Smith & Wesson’s precision during the era. Collectors value these for their craftsmanship and rarity compared to the more common .22 LR variants. This example, accompanied by its box and documents, makes a fitting addition to any serious Smith & Wesson collection. So bid high and bid firm. I encourage you to look at the item’s condition in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
