Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 51 Kit Gun is a highly regarded small-frame revolver designed for lightweight field carry, trail use, and recreational shooting. Chambered in .22 Magnum Rimfire (.22 M.R.F.), the Model 51 provided outdoorsmen with a flat-shooting, higher-velocity rimfire cartridge in the compact and well-balanced J-frame platform. Produced from 1961 to 1974, examples from the 1969–1971 period such as this one feature desirable traits including a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The 3.5” barrel configuration enhances portability while retaining excellent practical accuracy, especially when paired with the fully adjustable rear sight.

This revolver retains approximately 99% of its original blued finish and presents exceptionally well. According to the consignor, it has not been fired outside of factory testing. There is a faint, crisp turn line on the cylinder and slight scratches at the rear of the frame consistent with normal operation, but no carbon buildup on the cylinder face. The screw heads remain sharp and the factory markings are clear and well defined. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion. The case-colored hammer and trigger provide attractive visual contrast to the deep original blue finish.

The revolver is fitted with its original two-piece checkered Magna stocks featuring S&W medallions, and the right panel is stamped with the matching serial number “13794,” adding to its collector appeal. The grips show only minor dings and light handling wear, with sharp checkering and no chips or cracks, rating in Fine condition overall. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, with light play at lockup when the trigger is depressed. Accompanied by its original cardboard box and paperwork, this Model 51 represents a scarce and desirable C&R Kit Gun in Excellent to Fine overall condition—an outstanding example of Smith & Wesson’s classic rimfire craftsmanship.
