Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “500 S&W MAGNUM”. The left side of the frame has the S&W monogram, the right is marked with the four-line Marcas Registradas and “500ES”. The right side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”.  

Barrel Length: 2.75” 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with an orange insert, pinned to a riser in the barrel. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched white outlined sight that is micrometer-click adjustable for windage and elevation screw set to the frame.   

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece cobblestone textured black rubber Hogue Monogrip with finger grooves and molded S&W logos at the top on each side which fully encloses the grip frame. The grip has no notable wear or damage. There are no rips or tears. Overall, the grip is in about Excellent Like New condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. The cylinder has some barely visible burn fouling on the face but each chamber is very clean In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.  

Overall Condition: This pistol shows only minor handling wear and some very fine lines in the finish common with stainless. The cylinder has a very thin turn line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent+ condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup produces very light play on each chamber. The trigger pull is exceptionally crisp with almost no overtravel.  We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.  

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver includes a serialized S&W blue case with foam, manual and paperwork, cable lock with keys, spent shell case with info card and lock keys.  

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 500 ES (Emergency Survival) is a compact variant of the powerful Model 500 revolver, designed with portability and practicality in mind for wilderness survival scenarios. Chambered in .500 S&W Magnum, it retains most of the raw stopping power of the full-size version but features a shorter 2.75″ barrel, making it significantly easier to carry in a pack, holster, or emergency kit. Despite the short barrel, it still delivers devastating energy, making it well-suited for defense against large predators in remote environments.

The 500 ES includes distinctive features such as a stainless steel frame, rubber Hogue grips with finger grooves for improved control, and a bright orange front sight for quick visibility. The short barrel and massive caliber result in stout recoil, but the revolver’s solid construction and ergonomic grip help mitigate some of that force.
