Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 28-2, also known as the “Highway Patrolman,” is a classic revolver that offers robust construction, reliability, and powerful performance. Introduced in the 1950s, it was designed to provide law enforcement officers with a durable and cost-effective alternative to the more expensive Model 27 revolver. One of the distinguishing features of the Model 28-2 is its rugged construction. It features a solid carbon steel frame and barrel, providing durability and longevity. The revolver’s large N-frame design contributes to its substantial weight, helping to mitigate recoil and enhance shooting comfort. The Model 28-2 features a six-round capacity, with a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger mechanism. The revolver also has a pinned barrel and a serrated ramp front sight, along with a micro-adjustable rear sight, allowing for precise aiming and target acquisition.
This particular gun is a New York State Police variant, with a red ramp front sight, an outline rear sight, and an “NYSP” stamped on the left side. Serial number range for authentic NYSP.
Overall, the Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 is a reliable revolver that has stood the test of time. It offers shooters a combination of rugged reliability, powerful performance, and classic styling, making it a favorite among law enforcement professionals, collectors, and enthusiasts alike.
