Markings: The crane cut is stamped “MOD. 27-2” and the serial number N694714 is present in the usual locations. Standard Smith & Wesson factory markings are present on the barrel and frame consistent with late-1970s production. The grips carry S&W medallions.

Sights / Optics: Serrated ramp patridge front sight with white-outline adjustable rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Goncalo Alves oversize target stocks with checkering and S&W medallions. The stocks are period correct and show light handling wear only; no cracks or major chips visible. The checkering remains well defined.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original factory blue finish. The revolver presents as factory fired only with strong overall preservation; the bluing is largely intact across the barrel, cylinder and frame with only light handling marks consistent with careful use.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Mechanics: The action functions as intended in both double-action and single-action. Cylinder rotates and locks up properly; timing and lockup appear correct for a stock N-frame target revolver of this era. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Accessories: Smith & Wesson instruction sheets and paperwork.

Our Assessment:
The Model 27 has long been regarded as S&W’s flagship target revolver and this 27-2 sits squarely in that lineage. Produced on an N-frame with the classic target hammer and trigger package, the 6″ pinned barrel gives the gun an authoritative handling balance and the patridge front / rear sight set makes it an excellent candidate for both precise shooting and display. The presence of period Goncalo Alves target stocks, recessed cylinder, and original paperwork only enhances the piece’s completeness.

From a condition and originality standpoint, this example is notable. The blue finish appears original and largely complete, the bore rates extremely well, and the action shows sharp target-style hammers and triggers indicative of the late-’70s target configuration. There are light handling marks consistent with a firearm that was used but well maintained — nothing that detracts from its visual appeal or mechanical reliability.

For collectors and shooters alike, this revolver sits in a sweet spot: it’s late enough to feature many of the desirable target upgrades, yet early enough to retain the full-fat N-frame proportions and correct period components associated with classic Model 27s. It will appeal to the S&W aficionado seeking a high-condition, ready-to-shoot 6″ 27-2 with original finish and paperwork. So bid high and bid firm.
