Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 represents the pinnacle of revolver design during the golden era of American handgun manufacturing. Built on the large N-frame and finished to a high polish blue, this revolver was marketed as a premium version of the original .357 Magnum revolver introduced in the 1930s. The 27-2 variant features both a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, hallmark traits of the era that have long since been retired—making this revolver especially appealing to collectors.
This specific revolver was manufactured in 1969, placing it squarely in the desirable pre-1970s era. The 5-inch barrel length is considered by many to be the ideal configuration, striking a perfect balance between sight radius, ballistic performance, and holster compatibility. The factory target stocks, red ramp front sight, and fully adjustable rear sight round out the configuration for precision and control, whether at the range or in the field.
Whether you’re a Smith & Wesson enthusiast, a collector of classic revolvers, or simply someone who appreciates superb craftsmanship, this Model 27-2 is a prime example of why these revolvers have remained so coveted over the decades.
