Markings: Smith & Wesson marked on the right side of the barrel; the left barrel flat is stamped “45 CAL MODEL 1950.” The crane cut is stamped with the serial DBN2339 over “MODEL 22-4.” The front sight is marked “SDM” and includes a brass insert; proof and manufacturing marks appear on the frame and barrel flats consistent with factory assembly. All markings described are present.
Barrel Length: 4 1/8″
Sights / Optics: Fixed recessed trough rear sight integral to the top strap and a dovetailed front blade sight with a brass insert, marked SDM.
Stock / Grips: Checkered walnut stocks with S&W medallions; grips show several small chips at the diamond points and a grip adapter is installed..
Finish: Vivid case-hardened frame with deep factory blue on the barrel, cylinder and small parts. The revolver shows light handling wear overall and a visible turn line on the cylinder; there are burn/finish marks at the front of the cylinder. Overall estimated finish retention is over 90% plus with attractive, even coloring to the case colors and blue.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore but there is stubborn fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Mechanics: Cylinder times and locks up properly; the action cycles freely in both double- and single-action. Ejector and extractor rod operate as expected for a production Model 22. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Accessories: Original factory blue polymer case, Smith & Wesson envelope, factory manual, keys.
Our Assessment:
This Model 22-4 is an attractive, lightly carried example that presents much like a near-period custom with its vivid case-hardened frame set against deep, even blue on the barrel and cylinder. The revolver retains original accessories and paperwork, the bore is excellent, and finish retention is excellent for a carried piece; the front-of-cylinder burn and the cylinder turn line are the most notable condition issues but do not detract from its strong visual appeal.
