Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson K-32 Masterpiece, designated as the Model 16-4, represents a late and refined chapter in Smith & Wesson’s long-running tradition of precision K-frame target revolvers. The K-32 lineage dates back to the prewar era, when Smith & Wesson established the “Masterpiece” line as the gold standard for balance, accuracy, and shootability. By 1990, the Model 16-4 reflected a modernized interpretation of that philosophy, combining classic blued steel aesthetics with contemporary chambering and production methods while retaining the elegant proportions that defined the K-frame.
Chambered in .32 H&R Magnum, this revolver showcases a cartridge developed to offer mild recoil, excellent accuracy, and efficient ballistic performance in a compact revolver format. The .32 H&R Magnum has earned a quiet but loyal following among experienced revolver shooters who value controllability and precision over brute force. In a 4-inch configuration, the Model 16-4 balances exceptionally well, aided by its Patridge front sight and micro-click adjustable rear sight, features that underscore its target-oriented roots and practical versatility.
This example retains approximately 97 percent of its original blued finish, with only minimal edge thinning and a light cylinder turn line consistent with limited use. The bore is exceptionally clean with sharp rifling, supporting the revolver’s strong overall presentation. Fitted with factory Goncalo Alves combat-style stocks dated to 1990, the revolver presents as a well-preserved and highly representative example of a late-production K-32 Masterpiece, blending traditional Smith & Wesson craftsmanship with a cartridge choice that emphasizes finesse and shootability.
