Bore Condition: The bore is gray with defined rifling. There is light pitting and erosion throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 5/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains approximately 85% of its original nickel finish. There is flaking and thinning at high points and edges, particularly around the muzzle and latch. The factory engraving remains crisp. The cylinder shows light turn wear. The screw heads are lightly marked but serviceable. The markings and serial numbers are clear. This revolver rates in Very Good condition overall for its age.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrel locks securely in place and tips up properly. The hammer holds at full cock and releases as intended. The indexing and timing are good. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment:
This is a beautiful example of a factory-engraved Smith & Wesson Model 1, 3rd Issue — a small .22 Short tip-up revolver that became immensely popular in the post-Civil War era. With its factory scroll engraving and genuine pearl grips, this revolver would have been a presentation piece or a high-end personal sidearm.
Produced in the millions, the Model 1 is a cornerstone of early American cartridge revolver design, and examples like this—factory engraved and with matching serials—are especially collectible. The nickel finish has held up well for a gun that’s well over 140 years old, and the pearl grips add both elegance and collector appeal.
For collectors of early Smith & Wessons, 19th-century American handguns, or factory-engraved pieces, this revolver offers a rare combination of condition, features, and aesthetic charm. So bid high and bid firm. I highly encourage you to take a look at the condition of the item in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
