Markings: The left of the frame is marked with the serial number. The side plate is marked with the S&W monogram logo. The left side of the barrel is marked “”INTERNATIONAL” / LINE THROWER” and “MOD. 270”. The bottom of the barrel is matched and marked “7246”. The bottom of the barrel latch is marked “7246”. The right side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON CHEMICAL CO., INC. / JEFFERSON, OHIO 44047 U.S.A.”. The top of the carry handle is marked “U.S.C.G. APPROVAL NO. 160.040/2/0”.

Sights / Optics: There are no sights.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered walnut target stocks with a football cut and S&W medallions. There are no major defects, just light handling wear. The checkering is sharp. There is also a smooth wood handle on the top of the barrel, it has light handling marks with no major defects. Overall, the grips rate in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The smooth bore has no major defects.
Overall Condition: This gas/flare gun retains approximately 95% of its metal finish. There are some little scuffs on the metal. There are a few faint oil marks. There are couple of little marks through the finish. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this gas/flare gun is in about Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The gun functions properly. The barrel has almost no play to the frame. The double-action trigger is smooth, the single action is crisp. We did not fire this flare/gas gun. As with all previously owned items, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Built on a modified N-frame, the Smith & Wesson Model 270 International Line Thrower was part of Smith & Wesson’s efforts to diversify their company, which included making air guns, knives, handcuffs and gas and line-throwing guns. This example is the 270 Line Thrower, in about Fine-Excellent condition. This is likely the nicest line thrower ever made and certainly has the nicest trigger pull of a line thrower. It has a Smith & Wesson trigger pull as opposed to the typical staple gun trigger pull that flare guns and line throwers usually have. For the dedicated Smith & Wesson collector who has all the mainstays, this is a great opportunity to get something a little more obscure… we don’t see these often. Please see our photos and good luck!
