Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore but there is stubborn fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: Overall excellent-plus cosmetic condition with evidence of careful handling and light surface polishing marks consistent with maintenance and storage. The stainless surfaces retain approximately 95% of their factory appearance with no visible pitting or corrosion in the control areas; the compensator and barrel flats show light tool/installation marks consistent with accessory removal and re-installation.
Mechanics: Cylinder locks up tightly, timing and lockwork appear correct, double-action and single-action functions are crisp and positive with a smooth trigger return. The factory compensator and spare compensator appear correct and serviceable; the factory cable lock and manual are present. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box / Paperwork & Accessories: Includes Smith & Wesson blue plastic factory case, instruction manual, factory test envelope dated 11-05-2012 signed by technician (Luis R.), factory cable lock, two spare billet aluminum five-shot moon/loader-type cartridges (spare cylinder-style loaders in aluminum, two-piece), spare compensator in factory bag, and museum/manual paperwork inserts.
Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson 500 was introduced to deliver maximum straight-walled big-game performance in a production revolver and this 8 3/8″ compensated example represents the original heavy-frame concept carried to a practical, shootable configuration. Visually the gun presents very well — stainless surfaces are bright with light maintenance marks, the Hi-Viz front sight and factory compensator give the muzzle a purposeful, sport-hunter appearance, and the Hogue grip retains a crisp, serviceable feel.
The .500 S&W Magnum cartridge was developed in the early 2000s to push large heavy bullets at hunting velocities from a revolver platform; its role is firmly in the hunting and big-game field where deep penetration and blunt stopping power matter. This example’s tight lockup, sharp rifling, included spare compensator and factory paperwork make it a complete factory package suitable for a collector who prefers factory-complete examples or a shooter looking for a hard-hitting stainless package. We are no longer offering layaway. KF
