Our Assessment: The Shiloh Sharps 1874 rifle in .45-70 is a highly regarded firearm, celebrated for its historical significance, craftsmanship, and accuracy. This rifle is a faithful reproduction of the original Sharps Model 1874, which gained fame in the late 19th century as a powerful and precise long-range rifle. Manufactured by Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing Company, the 1874 embodies both historical authenticity and modern precision. The rifle is chambered in .45-70, a cartridge renowned for its effectiveness in hunting and long-range shooting. The .45-70 cartridge has a storied history, having been adopted by the U.S. military in the late 1800s and widely used by hunters and marksmen for its powerful ballistics. The 30-inch octagon barrel is a standout feature of the Shiloh Sharps 1874. The octagonal shape adds to the rifle’s aesthetic appeal and provides a traditional look reminiscent of the original Sharps rifles. The length of the barrel contributes to increased accuracy, muzzle velocity, and sight radius making it ideal for long-range shooting. To enhance the long range capability of this rifle it is equipped with a Vernier sight. This type of sight is essentially a micrometer and allows for extremely precise adjustments for elevation. The Vernier tang sight is a hallmark of Sharps rifles, the use of which was famously portrayed in the 1990 classic movie “Quigley Down Under”. This example is also unique in the world of Shiloh Sharps rifles with the non engraved French Grey receiver that blends in perfectly with the Hartford tip forend.
