Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99G Takedown is one of the most versatile and innovative sporting rifles of the early 20th century, combining Savage’s famous hammerless lever-action with the convenience of a quick-detach barrel and receiver assembly for easy transport. By 1921, when this example was manufactured, the .300 Savage cartridge had already cemented itself as one of the premier hunting rounds of the day, offering ballistics that came remarkably close to the .30-06 in a shorter, more efficient case. The pairing of the .300 Savage chambering with the rotary-magazine Model 99G made for a rifle that was accurate, reliable, and capable of handling both deer and larger North American game.
This rifle features a 24-inch barrel, factory takedown system, and retains about 90% of its original blued finish, with some thinning and freckled surface corrosion, most notably on the receiver. The case coloring on the lever and trigger guard remains vivid and attractive, a detail prized by collectors of early Savage rifles. The bore is excellent—bright, sharp, and rating a 10/10 in this writer’s opinion—ensuring accuracy in the field. The walnut stock set, with its capped semi-pistol grip and schnabel-tipped forend, displays fine checkering and shows only modest wear consistent with careful use over the last century.
Mechanically, the action remains smooth with a crisp trigger, and the takedown system locks up properly. For collectors, this 1921 Model 99G Takedown represents an especially desirable configuration of one of America’s greatest lever-action rifles. For hunters, it remains an eminently practical and powerful tool, with the .300 Savage cartridge still more than capable on deer, elk, and black bear. Whether valued for its innovation, its condition, or its connection to a golden age of American sporting rifles, this Savage 99 will make an outstanding addition to any collection.
