Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SAVAGE HI-PRESSURE STEEL / 250-3000”. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE SAVAGE ARMS CORP. UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A. / JULY 25. 1893, OCT. 3, 1899. SEP. 10 1907. MAY. 25. 1909. JUNE. 1. 1909”. The underside of the receiver is marked “214452”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “OFF”. The rear sight is marked “SAVAGE ARMS CORP. / UTICA, N.Y. PAT.-PEND.”. The buttplate is marked with the Savage logo at the toe. The base of the lever is marked “M”. There is a faint “4” and “2” marked in the barrel channel of the forend.
Barrel Length: 22” Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade pinned into a machined base that is integral to the barrel. The rear sight is “U” notched elevator sight dovetailed into the barrel. The top tang has a factory pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered wood with a pistol grip, straight comb, schnabel tip forend, and a shotgun-style metal buttplate. There is a crack on the buttstock at the toe. There are a few scattered light compressions. There are a few little dings into the wood, some of the most noticeable are on the nose of the forend. There are some scattered light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. The LOP is approximately 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The serrated plate has some little scuffs and minor scratches, mostly at the heel and toe. The stocks rate in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some light scuffs on the barrel that have caused faint thinning. There is a light hairline scratch on the top of the barrel at about the midsection. There is a light ding on the barrel on the top markings and a heaver mark blow the stockline. The receiver has light handling wear and a couple of spots of light surface oxidation. There are some oil marks on the lever in addition to a few areas of light thinning and surface oxidation. There is standard operational wear. The screwheads show light use. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Savage 1899/99 model rifles have quite a history. They were preceded by the Model 1895, which was the first hammerless lever-action rifle produced. A hammerless action was useful as it reduces the lock time, allows the rifle to be fired more accurately and is less likely to jam in brush or snag in clothing. The 1895 and 1899/99 models used a rotary magazine to hold the cartridges, using a spring-loaded spool with grooves. The 1899/99 models added a counter to the spool to indicate how many rounds are loaded. This design allowed the use of spitzer bullets, which could not be used in most of the tubular magazine lever action rifles of the times because the pointed tips could cause an accidental discharge. This gave Savage a lead in producing rifles that could handle high-velocity smokeless powder cartridges with bullets offering flatter trajectories than other lever-action designs. This is a 1920s takedown example chambered for .250-3000 Savage, it looks great and would be a nice addition to a Savage collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
