Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99EG is one of the most respected American sporting rifles of the twentieth century, representing the peak of Savage’s lever action innovation prior to the Second World War. By 1940, the Model 99 had firmly established itself as a modern alternative to traditional tubular magazine lever guns, offering a hammerless action, solid receiver, and rotary magazine that safely accommodated spitzer bullets. The EG variant, with its longer barrel and classic sporting configuration, was aimed squarely at serious hunters who wanted accuracy, strength, and modern ballistics in a familiar lever action form.
This example is chambered in .300 Savage, a cartridge introduced by Savage in 1920 to deliver near .30-06 performance in a compact action. The rifle is fitted with a 24 inch barrel and retains approximately 90 percent of its original metal finish, with only minor edge thinning and scattered light scratches visible on close inspection. The bluing remains deep and even across the barrel and receiver, while the case coloring on the lever and trigger guard is bright and well defined. Markings are clear throughout, and the screw heads remain serviceable with strong slots. The factory checkered walnut stocks feature a capped semi pistol grip, straight comb, and schnabel tipped forend, showing only light handling wear with crisp checkering and strong finish.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, and the internal rotary magazine remains intact and functional. Mechanically, the action operates smoothly and the trigger exhibits a clean, crisp break. This rifle includes its box and presents as a very attractive prewar Savage 99EG that clearly reflects the quality and refinement that made the Model 99 a benchmark American sporting rifle.
