Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99-358 “Brush Gun” is a scarce and highly desirable variation of the classic Model 99 platform, produced only briefly in the late 1970s. Chambered in the powerful .358 Winchester, this rifle was purpose-built for dense timber and thick cover hunting where fast follow-up shots and heavy-hitting rounds are a must. The rotary magazine allows the use of pointed bullets—an advantage over traditional tubular magazine lever guns—and the solid frame design adds rigidity and strength. The .358 Win. cartridge is an outstanding medium- to large-game round, offering deep penetration and impressive energy transfer, making this an ideal choice for elk, bear, or whitetail in heavy brush.
This example, manufactured in 1977, is in about Excellent condition with 97% of its original finish, vibrant case color on the lever, and a bright, sharp bore. The walnut stocks are clean and well-fitted, showing only light wear. Topped with a Savage-branded 4×33 scope in Weaver pivot mounts, this rifle is ready for the field and retains the look and feel of a true working classic. With limited production numbers and rising collector interest in late-model Savage 99s, particularly in rarer calibers like .358 Win., this Brush Gun stands out as both a functional woods rifle and a valuable addition to any serious lever-action or big game collection.
