Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99 is one of the most distinctive and mechanically advanced lever-action rifles of its era, known for its hammerless design, rotary magazine, and ability to safely use pointed bullets—features that set it apart from traditional lever guns. Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, it quickly earned a reputation among hunters for its reliability, accuracy, and innovative engineering. Chambered in .300 Savage, the rifle offered ballistics approaching the .30-06 of its day in a more compact, fast-handling package, making it a favorite for deer and elk hunting across North America.

This 1954-produced example shows honest field wear, retaining about 90% of its original blued finish with minor thinning present on the barrel and other exposed areas. The checkered walnut stocks remain structurally sound and relatively unmarred by operational use. The bore is in strong condition, bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9/10, and the action cycles smoothly with a crisp trigger break.

For the shooter, this rifle offers the enduring appeal of the .300 Savage cartridge in a platform well-suited for medium and large game. For the collector, it represents an early 1950s production Model 99 with classic features and original finish, making it a solid candidate for either restoration or continued use as a well-seasoned hunting rifle with decades of proven service behind it.
