Our Assessment: This Savage Model 516 Striker chambered in .270 Winchester Short Magnum represents one of the most ambitious factory bolt-action pistols ever offered, blending rifle-grade performance with handgun form. Produced by Savage during the late 1990s through early 2000s, the Striker series was designed for handgun hunters seeking true long-range capability rather than novelty. Chambering the powerful .270 WSM in a compact bolt-action pistol underscores Savage’s willingness to push the limits of handgun ballistics, delivering magnum-level performance in a highly specialized platform built around strength, precision, and control. From a mechanical and performance standpoint, this example presents extremely well. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only faint erosion along the lands, rating a strong 9 out of 10 and indicating limited use. The 12.5 inch barrel is paired with a two-position adjustable radial brake, extending overall length to approximately 14.5 inches and significantly aiding recoil management and muzzle control. The Weaver-style rail atop the receiver reflects the Striker’s optic-centric design philosophy, as these pistols were intended to be scoped for precision shooting rather than fitted with iron sights. The bolt-action system functions correctly, and the internal two-round magazine feeds as intended.
Overall condition is excellent, with approximately 99 percent of the original stainless finish retained and only light handling marks visible. The black polymer stock shows minor handling wear but remains free of cracks or chips, presenting in Very Good Plus condition. Screw heads are sharp, pins are unmarred, and markings remain clear and legible. Taken as a whole, this Model 516 Striker stands as a compelling example of Savage’s innovative approach to handgun hunting, offering serious power, strong mechanical integrity, and excellent overall condition for shooters or collectors drawn to extreme-performance specialty firearms. -R.E.
