Our Assessment: The Savage Model 389, manufactured by MAR of Italy and imported by Savage, is a classic European style combination gun designed to offer versatility in the field. Featuring a 12 gauge shotgun barrel paired with a .308 Winchester rifle barrel in a break action configuration, the Model 389 reflects the traditional concept of a single firearm capable of handling both small game and larger quarry. Produced in 1988 per its date code, this example retains approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish, showing only light handling wear and a few minor scratches. The markings are clear and legible, with sharp screw heads and unmarred pins, placing the firearm in Very Good to Fine overall condition.
Chambered for 3 inch 12 gauge shells and .308 Winchester, the Model 389 offers considerable flexibility. The 12 gauge smoothbore with Invector pattern choke tubes, currently fitted with an Improved Cylinder, accommodates a wide range of shot and slug loads. The .308 Winchester, introduced in 1952 and widely adopted for both sporting and military use, remains one of the most respected medium game rifle cartridges due to its balance of power and manageable recoil. Both bores are bright with sharp rifling in the rifle barrel and no erosion noted in either, showing only light fouling. In this writer’s opinion, both bores rate 9 out of 10.
The two piece checkered walnut stock set features a semi pistol grip, fluted straight comb, vented rubber buttpad, detachable forend, and installed sling mounts. The wood shows scattered scratches and compression dents consistent with use but remains free of cracks or chips, rating in Very Good condition. The action locks up correctly, the tang mounted safety functions as intended, and the trigger breaks crisp and clean. A Simmons 4x Prodiamond scope is mounted, though functionality cannot be guaranteed. This Savage Model 389 stands as a practical and well preserved example of a late twentieth century combination gun built for adaptable field use.
