Our Assessment: The Savage Anschutz Model 54 Sporter represents one of the finest sporting rimfire rifles imported into the United States during the postwar period, combining German precision with American market appeal. Built in West Germany on the renowned Anschutz Model 54 action and imported by Savage Arms, these rifles earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy, refined triggers, and meticulous craftsmanship. By 1971, Anschutz had fully established the Model 54 as a benchmark rimfire action, widely respected in both competition and high-grade sporting rifles.
This example presents as a well-preserved and honest sporting rifle. The barrel retains a bright bore with sharp rifling, earning a 10/10 rating, and the rifle overall retains approximately 97.5 percent of its original blued finish. Light wear is present, including minor scratches on the trigger guard and a small area of finish loss on the bottom metal near the magazine well, consistent with careful field use. The walnut stock shows scattered handling marks and pressure dents throughout, but the checkering remains mostly well defined, the finish is strong, and the stock fits the action tightly with no structural concerns.
Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly, with the bolt operating smoothly and the safety working as intended. Included with the rifle are a factory Anschutz five-round magazine in excellent condition and Talley scope rings, adding to its overall completeness. As a C&R-eligible rimfire sporting rifle built on the legendary Model 54 action, this piece offers enduring quality, classic European styling, and outstanding practical accuracy.
