Our Assessment: Sako introduced the L61R Finnbear during the early 1960s as its premier long-action sporting rifle, a design that helped establish Finland’s reputation for exceptionally precise and reliable bolt guns. Built around Sako’s smooth, controlled-feed action and known for superb barrel quality, the Finnbear quickly became a favorite among hunters pursuing large game in North America and abroad. This example, manufactured sometime between 1962 and 1973, reflects that classic era with its deep polished blue, crisp factory markings, and elegantly executed walnut stock featuring a Monte Carlo comb and sharp wraparound checkering.

Chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1962 and renowned for its flat trajectory and excellent long-range performance. This Finnbear embodies the pairing of European craftsmanship with one of America’s most versatile magnum rounds. The bore condition is outstanding, the metal shows virtually no wear, and the stock exhibits only the lightest evidence of careful handling. Well-preserved rifles from this early production period are increasingly desirable, representing Sako at its traditional best: refined machining, reliable function, and a balance of form and performance that defined mid-20th-century sporting arms.
