Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top front of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1.” and the top rear is marked “SAGINAW SG / 3289121”. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFG. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 1-44” and “P”. The left side of the barrel shank is marked with a “flaming bomb”. The trigger group is marked “SG” on the right rear which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is unmarked which was used by Saginaw Gear (page 89). The magazine release is marked “E-SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is marked “SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 95). The bottom of the operating slide is marked “SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “SG” on the left lug which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “PO Q” which is a Quality Hardware mark (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “I.R.CO.” which is a Winchester mark (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “AI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The recoil plate is marked “SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 135). The interior of the sling well is marked “B” and “RSG” which was used by Saginaw Gear, Saginaw S’G’ and Irwin-Pedersen (page 108-109). The right side of the butt is marked with an Ordnance Department “crossed cannons” cartouche next to “SG in a box”. These are Saginaw Gear marks (see page 125 for photo). The left side of the grip is marked with an Augusta Arsenal Rebuild stamp “AA HZ” (page 183). The underside of the handguard is marked “RSG” which was used by Saginaw Gear and Saginaw S’G’ (page 138). The face of the grip is marked with a “P” proof and the base is marked with a “cross”. The right side of the butt is marked with a number that does not match the serial number.
The aftermarket magazine and the sling are unmarked. The muzzle cover is marked “U.S.” on one side and “HAV. STCH. CO. / 1944” on the other. The dual magazine pouch is marked “U.S.” on the flap and “RUBON / K.C. 1943” on the rear.
Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between 2 protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III fully adjustable aperture.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through, and metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes and small scratches. The wood shows several scrapes, small scratches and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild
Bore Condition: The lands are bright, the grooves are semi bright and the rifling is sharp. There is fouling and intermittent erosion in the groves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches and light discoloration from oxidation. The sides of the trigger group show areas of thinning. The bottom rear of the barrel shows some light surface erosion. The right side of the receiver shows some thinning from cycling. The recoil plate screw head shows heavy use. Most of the markings are clear. Some of the barrel markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 10 round aftermarket magazine, green canvas sling, muzzle cover and a dual mag pouch. The magazine shows light marks and is in about Fine condition. The sling shows scrapes & oxidation on the metal as well as discoloration and soiling on the canvas. It is in about Very Good condition. The muzzle cover shows light soiling & light fading. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. The dual mag pouch shows light discoloration. It is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Our Assessment: This Saginaw Gear (Saginaw SG) M1 Carbine was built sometime between 1942 and 1944 at the original Saginaw, Michigan factory. After WWII it was Arsenal Rebuilt at the Augusta Arsenal.
There are 2 Saginaw Gear manufacturers of M1 Carbines. Both were Divisions of General Motors. They were located in different cities. Saginaw Carbines made in the original Saginaw, Michigan factory are marked “S.G.” or “SG”. Saginaw Carbines made in the Grand Rapids, Michigan factory are marked “ S’G’ ”. Saginaw S’G’ guns were produced from the remnants of the failed Irwin-Pedersen factory in Grand Rapids. Saginaw took over production in Grand Rapids and marked the facilities M1 Carbines S’G’ to differentiate them from the ones produced at the original Saginaw plant.
