Make: Saginaw Gear (Saginaw SG). Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors. Made in the original Saginaw, Michigan factory.
There are 2 Saginaw Gear manufacturers of M1 Carbines. Both were Divisions of General Motors. They were located in different cities. Saginaw Carbines made in the original Saginaw, Michigan factory are marked “S.G.” or “SG”. Saginaw Carbines made in the Grand Rapids, Michigan factory are marked “ S’G’ ”. Saginaw S’G’ guns were produced from the remnants of the failed Irwin-Pedersen factory in Grand Rapids. Saginaw took over production in Grand Rapids and marked the facilities M1 Carbines S’G’ to differentiate them from the ones produced at the original Saginaw plant.

Year of Manufacture: 1942 to 1944. No specific manufacture dates are listed due to a number of reasons explained on pages 24 to 26 of Scott Duff’s book, The M1 Carbine Owner’s Guide.

Action Type: Semi Auto, Detachable Magazine. There is No magazine.

Markings: There is no import mark. The top front of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1.” and the top rear is marked “SAGINAW S.G. / 5860832”. The top of the barrel is marked (faded) “SAGINAW S.G. DIV. / General Motors” and “P”. The interior of the trigger group’s magazine well is marked “.U.” which is an Underwood mark mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The left ear of the trigger group is marked “2” and the bottom of the trigger guard is marked with a small “flaming bomb”. The hammer is marked “LT-Q” which is a Quality Hardware mark (page 89). The Type IV magazine release is unmarked. The marking appears to have been lost during the rebuild (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which was used by Saginaw Gear and others (page 95). The interior of the operating slide is marked “DA-Q” which is a Quality Hardware mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “SG” on the left lug which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which was used by other manufacturers (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “I.R.CO.” on the right which was used by Inland and Winchester (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “SI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The recoil plate is marked “SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 135). The interior of the sling well is marked “M-U” which is an Underwood mark (page 108-109). The face of the grip is marked “P”. The left side of the butt is marked with an Italian Arsenal Rebuild stamp “star / FAT / 70” which stands for Fabbrica d’Armi a Terni 1970 (page 194). The underside of the handguard is marked “OI” which is an Inland mark (page 138).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between 2 protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III adjustable aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through, and metal buttplate. The refinished buttplate shows light scrapes. The nose of the stock shows a repaired crack on the right side.  The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is bright; semi bright at the muzzle. The rifling is sharp. There is some fouling and light frosting at the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The front of the barrel shows thinning. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes and small scratches. The right side of the receiver shows thinning from cycling. The recoil plate screw head shows heavy use. The markings on the barrel are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is No magazine. The rifle comes with a green canvas sling. It shows some soiling on the canvas as well as small scratches on the metal. OVerall it is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
