Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade in-line dovetailed to a ramped, banded base at the muzzle. The rear sight is a folding “U”-notch with a white diamond aiming reference dovetailed to a quarter-rib screwed to the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation and can be reversed to present a square notch. The rib is cut for Ruger rings holding a Leupold VX-II 3-9x Ultralight scope with duplex reticle.
Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The stocks are two-piee checkered wood with a grooved schnabel forend, capped pistol grip, straight comb, black rubber Ruger buttpad, and a sling stud in the belly (there is another sling mount banded to the barrel in front of the forend). The stocks have only a few minor marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has minor wear. Overall, the stocks are in Fine-Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Stainless Steel
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is a little stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are some light handling and storage marks but the gun lacks any notable defects. The action shows very minor operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope.
Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 was introduced in 1967 and at first seems an odd design choice for a modern rifle. Repeating rifles of many different designs had become the norm by the late ’60s and the single shot—certainly the falling-block single-shot—was on the outs with most hunters and target shooters. The brilliant success of the Ruger No. 1 comes from its embodiment of Ruger’s design philosophy: simple, durable, reliable. It has been chambered in nearly 50 different cartridges and continues to be manufactured and sold to this day. This example is in Excellent condition with an impressive stainless steel finish, manufactured in 2007 and is chambered in 6.5x55mm Swedish cartridges. The 6.5x55mm variant of the rifle is uncommon, the cartridge is effective for most types of game. This will make a wonderful hunting rifle, but will also be a nice addition for collectors of scarce Ruger variants. Good luck and happy bidding!
