LSB#: LSB250528MY019

Make: Ruger

Model: No. 1

Serial Number: 130-38434

Year of Manufacture: 1977

Caliber: 6mm Remington

Action Type: Falling Block Single Shot

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with Ruger’s Southport address. The left side of the barrel is marked with “6mm REM.”. The top of the receiver is marked “RUGER / NO. 1”. The bottom left of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 26”

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the barrel is mounted with a quarter rib, and set up for Ruger-style rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stocks show light storage wear from being stored in its factory box throughout the years. The forend shows swelling and slight warping from being in a high humidity environment. The checkering is well defined, and the finish on the stock is strong throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Fair condition, due to the minor swelling and warping of the forend.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there are a few small patches of corrosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows patchy surface corrosion, and pitting throughout all metal surfaces. In the areas without surface corrosion, the bluing is deep and dark. The markings are legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: THE ACTION DOES NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. The trigger engages when the lever is pulled upward. The only way to get the trigger to not engage upon closing the action is to put the safety on, then close the action. We strongly recommend a qualified gunsmith inspect and repair the action/trigger assembly before any attempt is made to use or fire this rifle. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a non-original ruger factory box, and scope rings.

Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 is Ruger’s modern take on the classic falling-block single-shot—engineered for a rigid one-piece action, precise lockup, and an unobstructed sighting plane. This 1977 example (26? barrel) displays the model’s clean lines and traditional quarter-rib provision for Ruger-style rings, and comes as a complete production rifle with two-piece checkered walnut stocks. The wood shows minor swelling and slight warping at the forend from humidity exposure, which affects cosmetic presentation and fit but does not show cracking; the stocks are therefore graded Fair while the remainder of the rifle retains a solid visual identity consistent with a well-used, boxed example.

Chambered in 6mm Remington — a short-action cartridge prized for efficient, flat trajectories and capable varmint/medium-game performance — this No. 1 checks out as an honest older production piece. The metal retains roughly 90% of its original finish with patchy surface corrosion and pitting noted across metal surfaces; the bore shows a few small corrosion spots and is conservatively rated 7/10. Mechanically the action is not functioning correctly (the trigger engages when the lever is closed), and a qualified gunsmith should inspect and repair the action and trigger assembly before any attempt is made to fire or use the rifle. Supplied with its non-original Ruger factory box and scope rings, the lot is a solid candidate for restoration or continued use after professional service.
