Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with Ruger’s 2-Line warning & Southport address. The left side of the barrel is marked with “CAL. .223”. The top of the receiver is marked “RUGER / NO. 1”. The bottom left of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 26”

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The barrel is mounted with a quarter rib, and on top of that quarter rib sits a Redfield 4-12x scope with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few minor dings scattered throughout the scope’s finish. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good condition. The scope sits in 1” rings, and comes with Butler Creek brand flip-up scope covers.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, red rubber buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stocks show light wear, with a few light scattered scratches, dings and pressure dents throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock’s finish is strong throughout. The stock fits the frame tightly, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows no notable wear on the metal surfaces. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 in .223 Remington is a tidy, precision-minded falling-block single-shot built for accuracy and simplicity — a natural fit for varmint work, target practice, or a lightweight single-shot hunting rig where flat trajectory and low recoil are priorities. This 1990 example presents very well: the metal and walnut retain a crisp factory look, the bore checks bright and rates an excellent 9.5/10, and the action/ tang safety functioned correctly during our mechanical inspection.

Fitted with a Redfield 4–12× mounted on the factory quarter-rib, the rifle is essentially turn-key for deliberate, optics-oriented shooting. Cosmetically it’s in Fine condition overall with only light handling marks to the stock and minimal finish wear; the scope shows light wear and rates Very Good. This rifle would make a great addition to an existing Ruger/Ruger No.1 collection, or as a quality varmint hunting rifle.
