Our Assessment: The Ruger Model 44 is a semi-automatic rifle that was produced by Sturm Ruger Company from 1961-1985. The Ruger Model 44 was designed to be a reliable and accurate firearm that is well-suited for hunting deer at closer ranges within dense woods as well as target shooting. It is known for its durability and ease of use, and it was popular with both recreational shooters and hunters.  Early models of this rifle were given the model name Deerstalker but after a lawsuit were forced to change the name to Ruger Carbine.  This rifle was so popular that it inspired the creation of the Ruger 10/22 which has become one of the most popular lines of rifles to date.

This Ruger Model 44 DeerStalker is a well-preserved example that is ready for use with minimal attention. The rifle retains approximately 95% of its original blued finish and the stock is in fine to excellent condition with only light handling marks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 10/10 to the writer’s inspection. The action and cross-bolt safety function correctly following a mechanic’s check, and the included 4×32 scope is in very good condition. Overall, the rifle presents as Fine to Excellent and is well suited for short-to-moderate range big game projects where the .44 Remington Magnum performs well.

The .44 Remington Magnum grew out of mid-20th century efforts to produce higher-velocity, higher-energy loads from the .44 Special case; those hot-rod experiments were later standardized into a magnum cartridge that found use in both revolvers and carbines for hunting and defensive applications, and firearms chambered for it can also safely fire the lower-pressure .44 Special for economical practice. This rifle will make an excellent addition to an existing Ruger collection, or for the hunter who wants to own a classic carbine 44 magnum to take into the woods on their next hunting trip.
