Our Assessment: Ruger’s .44 Carbine was introduced in 1961 as a modern, compact woods rifle designed around the then-new .44 Remington Magnum cartridge, and it quickly became a favorite among deer hunters in dense country. Its handling characteristics mirror a scaled-down M1 carbine, with a quick-cycling gas-operated action, light overall weight, and fast, instinctive sight alignment. By 1967, when this example was produced, Ruger had refined the design into one of the most practical brush guns of the era, a reputation that remains strong among collectors and shooters today.

The .44 Magnum itself was exceptionally well-suited to this platform, delivering authoritative close-range performance in a package far more controllable than many larger-bore lever rifles. This rifle’s excellent bore, strong original finish, and tight wood-to-metal fit all speak to careful use, and the crisp factory sights and compact 18.5-inch barrel preserve the lively balance that made these carbines so popular. It represents a clean, classic example of one of Ruger’s most iconic early long guns. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! -N.P
