Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade in-line dovetailed to a ramped, banded base at the muzzle. The rear sight is an Express-style sight with a fixed, wide “V”-notch and two taller folding “U”-notch leaves dvoetailed to a quarter-rib fixed to the rear of the barrel. The receiver is cut for Ruger rings (none present).

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered deluxe walnut with ebony forend tip, capped pistol grip, straight comb, black rubber Ruger buttpad, and a sling stud in the belly (there is a sling mount banded to the barrel in front of the forend). The stock has only a few scattered light marks, most notable on the right above the floorplate hinge. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad has minor wear. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue 

Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, just a little stubborn copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The action shows minor operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 has been a staple for American hunters since the 1960s. The model has seen some changes and updates, it has been produced in a wide variety of configurations, and chambered for a dizzying array of cartridges. This example is and M77 Mark II RSM in Excellent condition, manufactured in 2000. The rifle is chambered for .416 Rigby, an absolute powerhouse cartridge suited to dangerous game found in Africa and India. With Express-style sights, provision for Ruger rings, and a gorgeous walnut stock, this is a wonderful safari rifle that can take the biggest game in the most exotic places.
