Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with Ruger’s Southport address. The left side of the barrel is marked “6mm REM.”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, and “RUGER M77”

Barrel Length: 22″

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9×40 MC scope, with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few light scratches and dings throughout the scope’s finish. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good condition. The scope is mounted directly to the receiver by 1″ Ruger rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, red rubber Ruger buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows moderate wear, with a considerable number of scratches, dings, scuffs, and compressions scattered throughout. The checkering is mostly well defined, with a few of the dings being located in the checkering. The stock’s finish is largely intact, with a few areas showing finish wear, such as around the butt, and around the checkering on the forend. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Fair to Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with some finish thinning at the muzzle, on the bolt knob, and on the edges of the floorplate and trigger guard. There are scattered scratches and dings throughout all of the metal surfaces, along with very minor freckling of surface corrosion on the barrel, just forward of the receiver. Otherwise, the bluing is largely intact. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang mounted safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: Introduced during the period when Ruger’s original M77 rifles were earning their reputation for rugged reliability, this 1977 example represents the classic tang-safety era that many hunters still consider the high-water mark of the model. Chambered in 6mm Remington, the rifle combines the controlled-round-feed Mauser-influenced action with a flat-shooting, versatile cartridge well suited to both varmint and medium-game roles. The inclusion of a Zeiss Conquest optic reinforces its purpose as a practical, field-ready sporting rifle that reflects the no-nonsense character of Ruger’s early bolt-gun design philosophy.

The 6mm Remington began life as Remington’s response to the .243 Winchester, based on the 7x57mm Mauser case and introduced as the .244 Remington in the 1950s. Its redesignation to “6mm Remington” and adoption of faster twist rates allowed it to stabilize heavier bullets more effectively, revealing the cartridge’s true strengths; excellent velocity, mild recoil, and superb accuracy across a wide range of bullet weights. Its deep roots in the Mauser case family give it generous powder capacity for its caliber, contributing to its reputation for long-range performance, especially on varmints and pronghorn-class game.

This rifle shows honest wear on the walnut stock and light handling marks on the metal surfaces, consistent with a hunting arm that has seen real use but careful stewardship. The bore remains bright and strong, the action cycles properly, and the tang safety, one of the most beloved features of early M77s, functions as intended. With its period-appropriate craftsmanship, quality German glass, and desirable chambering, this Ruger M77 offers both usefulness in the field and appeal to shooters who favor the classic Ruger aesthetic and mechanics.
