Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts represents a classic American sporting rifle configuration paired with one of the most respected medium-game cartridges of the 20th century. Introduced in the 1930s and refined for modern sporting use, the .257 Roberts earned its reputation for flat trajectory, mild recoil, and excellent efficiency on deer-sized game. By the late 1980s, rifles like this one reflected Ruger’s emphasis on robust construction, controlled handling, and practical field accuracy, making them reliable companions for serious hunters.

This 1989-manufactured example from Sturm Ruger & Co. retains a bright bore with sharp rifling, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion, with no visible erosion. The rifle shows approximately 98% of its original blued finish, with only light handling marks and minor operational wear consistent with careful use. The factory checkered walnut stock remains structurally sound, fitting tightly to the barreled action, with well-defined checkering and an intact finish that displays attractively. The shorter 12 3/4″ length of pull suggests either factory configuration or an intentional setup for a more compact, quick-handling field rifle.

Mechanically, the action functions correctly and the safety operates as intended. The rifle includes factory Ruger 1″ scope rings, allowing for straightforward optic mounting while preserving the clean lines of the M77 action. Overall, this is a well-preserved and honest example of Ruger’s late-20th-century bolt-action sporting rifles in a classic, increasingly scarce chambering that continues to be appreciated for its balance of performance and shootability.
