Our Assessment: The Romanian Romarm PSL-54C occupies a distinct place in Cold War small arms history, developed as a designated marksman rifle to extend the reach of standard infantry units rather than as a true sniper rifle in the Dragunov sense. Manufactured at Cugir and issued beginning in the 1970s, the PSL combines the long 7.62x54R cartridge with a stretched, reinforced Kalashnikov-pattern action and a long, heavy barrel fitted with a muzzle brake. While visually similar to the Soviet SVD, the PSL reflects Romania’s own industrial approach, blending Warsaw Pact doctrine with domestic manufacturing solutions. The 1976 date places this rifle squarely in the heart of Cold War production, when these rifles were an integral part of Eastern Bloc doctrine.
This example presents in excellent overall condition, retaining strong original finish with only light handling marks consistent with careful storage and limited use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, and the rifle retains its correct military configuration with skeletonized thumbhole stock, tangent rear sight, side rail, and a period-pattern optic. The wood furniture shows light wear without cracks, and the included magazine completes the package as a representative and well-preserved example of a Romanian PSL. Overall, this rifle offers a compelling combination of Cold War history, distinctive military styling, and strong condition within the Dragunov-pattern lineage.
