Markings: The left side of the Type 2 slide is marked “REMINGTON RAND INC. / SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S.A.”. The left of the frame below the magazine release and the top of the slide in front of the rear sight are marked with a “P” acceptance proof. The left side of the frame above the magazine release is marked “FJA” (Frank J. Atwood Lt. Col., Sub-Inspector for Ithaca, Remington Rand and Union Switch). The right side of the frame is marked “UNITED STATES PROPERTY / NO. 966248 / RIA”, “M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY”, and at the rear there is an Ordnance mark. The top of the frame near the disconnector is marked “G”. The barrel is marked “P” on the left link lug, the right is marked “F”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a short blade with a serrated, ramped rear face fixed to the slide. The rear sight is a square notch sight dovetailed into the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Keyes #7 & #11 panels. The grips have some minor handling wear and a few light nicks in the checkering. The checkering is well defined, generally sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: “Parkerized”

Finish Originality: Original Slide, Removed on Frame

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 40% of its metal finish. The finish has been removed from the frame with a wire wheel. This has given it a hard chrome appearance, but it is bare metal. There is minor erosion evident on the bare metal. Most finish remains on the slide, with edge wear and some discoloration above “RAND”. The screw heads are usable though unattractive. The markings are still very clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions properly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: One G.I “R” marked blued magazine in 75% condition is included.

Our Assessment: The 1911 and 1911-A1 pistols served the military of the United States from 1911 to 1985, through two World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power and are held in high regard by those who have used them.

This example was made by Remington Rand in 1943 and has seen a lot of use, likely in the war, and an arsenal rebuild at Rock Island since. It appears that the frame and slide stayed together through the rebuild process and if not for the wire wheel removal of the finish, this would be a very attractive gun.

A replacement barrel is NOT necessary to make this a shooter, perfect for Wild Bunch matches. You may even want to get some finish back on the frame and toss it in the collection.
