Markings: The top of the barrel jacket is marked “THE REMINGTON ARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO., INC., REMINGTON ILION WORKS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A. / BROWNING’S PATENTS OCT 9, 1900 OCT. 16, 1900, JUNE 3, 1902, MAY 14, 1907, AND FEB 14, 1911”. The right side of the barrel jacket base is marked with an inspection mark and the left side is marked “DW”. The right rear of the barrel, visible at the ejection port is marked “35 REM”. The left side of the receiver is marked “Remington / TRADE MARK / MODEL 8 / 58662”. The bottom of the barrel jacket base is marked “58662” and the bottom of the receiver has inspection marks. The bottom tang is marked with an inspection mark.

Barrel Length: 22”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a base fixed to the front of the barrel jacket. The rear sight is absent and there are two screws on the rear of the barrel jacket. The tang is installed with an aperture peep sight. The left side of the receiver is installed with a two piece base with integral rings holding a Weaver J2.5 scope. The scope is missing one of the knob caps. The scope has some little scuffs and scratches and some spots of surface frost. The scope has a crosshair and the glass is clear, in about Very Good condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, and a serrated metal buttplate. There are some scattered scratches, draglines, compressions and some scuffs. The majority of the defects have colored with age. There are some little patches of finish loss and some of lightly bubbled finish. The LOP measures approximately 13 ¾” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light wear a the heel and toe with a few pinpricks on the toe. There is a bit of oxidation in the serations. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is some minor surface erosion at the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 82% of its metal finish. There is a coat of spots of finish loss from previous oxidation and spots of light surface oxidation. There are a couple little dents on the barrel jacket to the right of the front sight. There are some spots of light surface erosion under the finish, most noticeable on the left side of the magazine which also has some metal that appears lightly bent. There are spots of dark discoloration on the bolt and some light surface oxidation. There is some light dishing around some of the screwheads. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are mostly clear though some are shallow such as those on the receiver. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 8 was the brainchild of John Moses Browning. Originally patented in 1900, it was the first successful high-powered semi-auto rifle made in the United States–or just about anywhere else, for that matter. The model 8 was chambered in four different Remington rimless cartridges, they were the .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remington. This example made in 1928 is chambered in .35 Remington is in about Good condition with about 82% of its current metal finish remaining, scattered wear in its stocks, a shootable bore and strong mechanics. This one has some wear and has been refinished, but with its bright bore, strong mechanics, and neat optic, it will likely still make for a great brush rifle that you can use without worrying about getting a scuff or nick out in the field.
