Our Assessment: The Remington XP-100 occupies a distinctive place in American firearms history as one of the first commercially successful bolt action pistols designed specifically for precision shooting. Introduced in the early 1960s, the XP-100 challenged conventional ideas of handgun performance by adapting rifle level accuracy into a compact, centerfire pistol platform. Its front locking bolt design and short, rigid receiver quickly earned a following among silhouette shooters, varmint hunters, and experimenters pushing the limits of handgun ballistics.
Chambered in .223 Remington, a cartridge developed in the late 1950s and widely adopted for its flat trajectory and efficiency, the XP-100 capitalizes on the round’s inherent accuracy even from a shortened barrel. The 14 1/2 inch barrel length allows the cartridge to deliver meaningful velocity while maintaining the balance and handling characteristics that define the platform. Fitted with a Leupold 2.5 to 8x scope in Leupold mounts, this configuration reflects the precision oriented intent that made the XP-100 a benchmark for scoped specialty pistols.
This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish with clear markings and strong screwheads throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling present, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The laminate stock, transferred from a later Remington model, shows only minimal handling wear and presents in Very Good plus condition, complementing the overall high level of preservation. Together with the included soft case, this XP-100 represents a well kept and thoughtfully configured example of Remington’s most innovative pistol design.
