Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with some minor freckling of surface corrosion on the muzzle crown, and superficial handling marks throughout the barrel and receiver. The action does show some operational wear. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope and the magazine as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: Remington’s Model 788 has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most accurate “budget-class” bolt-action rifles ever produced. Introduced in 1967, the same year this rifle was made, the 788 offered rear-locking lugs, a rigid action, and barrels that routinely outperformed rifles costing far more. Chambered in .30-30 Winchester, a configuration produced in relatively limited numbers, the 788 became a cult favorite among woods hunters who wanted the accuracy of a bolt gun paired with the mild recoil and proven effectiveness of the classic .30-30 cartridge.
This 1967 rifle remains in very solid condition. Metal finish is strong at about 95 percent, with only minor freckling at the muzzle and light handling marks along the barrel and receiver. The stock shows typical field wear but remains structurally sound with no cracks or repairs, and the factory magazine is present, an important inclusion given their scarcity on the secondary market. Internally, the bore is excellent: bright, sharp, and completely erosion-free, consistent with a rifle that retains its full accuracy potential.
The rifle is topped with a Tasco 2–7×32 scope mounted in high Weaver rings, allowing continued use of the factory iron sights, a thoughtful setup for a .30-30 bolt gun intended for mixed environments. Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly with a smooth bolt throw and proper safety engagement.
With its early production date, desirable .30-30 chambering, excellent bore, and strong overall condition, this Model 788 stands as a highly capable vintage hunting rifle and a noteworthy example of one of Remington’s most accurate and beloved designs.
