Our Assessment: ?The Remington Model 7400 is a semi-automatic rifle produced from 1981 to 2004. It features a 22-inch barrel, a 4-round detachable box magazine, and a walnut stock with a straight comb and checkered pistol grip. The rifle is equipped with  fiber optic iron sights and a Leupold VX-1 3–9×40 scope, offering versatility for various shooting preferences. Weighing approximately 7.5 pounds, the Model 7400 is designed for balance and maneuverability in the field. Chambered in .35 Whelen, this cartridge was developed in the early 20th century by Colonel Townsend Whelen by creating a .30-06-length cartridge necked up to accept a .358-inch bullet. The cartridge quickly gained favor among hunters for its combination of manageable recoil and excellent terminal performance on medium to large game, and it remains a respected hunting round for those seeking a hard-hitting, versatile caliber in standard action rifles.

This Remington Model 7400 in .35 Whelen presents as a sound, serviceable semi-automatic hunting rifle that is ready for continued field use after routine maintenance. The rifle retains about 90% of its original blued finish with light scattered surface corrosion on the barrel, receiver and bolt, and the action shows normal operational wear on friction surfaces. The bore is bright with sharp rifling but shows scattered light pitting and some corrosion, and is graded approximately 7/10; a thorough cleaning and bore restoration should be performed if long-term accuracy is desired. The semi-automatic action and cross-bolt safety function as intended on a mechanical check, and the included Leupold VX-1 3–9×40 scope and one 4-round factory magazine accompany the rifle. A qualified gunsmith inspection is recommended prior to use to address the noted corrosion and to verify safe, serviceable operation.

With some attention to the areas of surface corrosion and to the bore, this rifle would make a great primary hunting rifle for any and all North American big game. It would also compliment an already existing Remington collection. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
