Our Assessment: The Remington Model 722, introduced in 1948, was part of Remington’s post-war push toward streamlined, high-performance bolt-action rifles. Built on a solid, no-frills action with dual locking lugs and a reputation for strength and accuracy, the 722 was offered in a variety of chamberings, including the versatile and respected .257 Roberts. Known for its flat trajectory, mild recoil, and excellent performance on medium game, the .257 Roberts has long been a favorite among knowledgeable hunters who value efficiency over raw power. By the mid-1950s, the Model 722 had developed a loyal following for its accuracy and reliability both in the field and on the range.

This 1956 example is in exceptional condition, retaining about 98% of its original blue finish with only minor operational wear on the bolt and action and a couple small scratches on the floorplate. The walnut stock, likely refinished in an oil finish, is solid, free of cracks, and shows only a single pressure dent on the comb. The bore is pristine, rating 10/10, and the rifle comes equipped with a Burris 3-9x Fullfield scope in excellent condition, offering a ready-to-hunt package. The only notable missing feature is the elevator insert for the factory rear sight, though this is easily replaced if desired.

For the shooter, this rifle offers superb accuracy, light recoil, and excellent handling characteristics, making it ideal for deer, antelope, and varmints alike. For the collector, its outstanding condition, desirable caliber, and clean presentation make it a standout among surviving Model 722s. Whether kept as a classic hunting rifle or added to a vintage Remington collection, this example delivers both performance and pride of ownership.
