Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with Remington’s Ilion, NY address, “223 REM”, and the “XZ” date code. The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proofs. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, and “Remington / MODEL 700”.
Barrel Length: 26″ Fluted
Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18×40 scope, with a BDC reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light handling wear. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good to Fine condition. The scope is mounted on a two-piece Leupold base, and sits in 1″ rings.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece fiberglass/composite stock, with a pistol grip with palm swells, fluted straight comb, Remington rubber buttpad, and a wide forend with dual sling studs. The stock is a tan base color, with black spiderweb. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few scattered dings and scuffs throughout. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good to Fine condition.

Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with thinning of the finish at the muzzle, and operational wear on the bolt, and other friction surfaces of the action. There are a few minor scratches and dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces. The bluing is deep and dark throughout, otherwise. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a light, crisp, and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1962, the .223 Remington rapidly became one of America’s defining small-bore centerfire cartridges, evolving from its military origins into one of the most widely used varmint, predator, and target rounds in the country. By the early 2000s, when this rifle was built, the .223 had long been established as a flat-shooting, low-recoil precision option, praised for its efficiency, mild manners, and compatibility with a vast range of bullet weights for both field and bench applications.
Remington’s 700 VSF (Varmint Synthetic Fluted) was engineered specifically with long-string accuracy and heat management in mind. The 26-inch fluted heavy barrel provides rigidity and consistency, while the composite stock with palm swells and a wide forend delivers a stable, repeatable interface with bags or bipods. Paired with the Nikon Buckmasters 6–18×40 scope, this setup offers the magnification and clarity needed for precise shot placement at extended small-bore distances. The rifle’s metalwork remains strong, the bore is excellent, and overall wear is cosmetic and minor, reflecting the careful use expected of a purpose-built varmint rifle.
