Our Assessment: Introduced in the 1960s, the Remington Model 700 BDL Varmint Special was designed with precision shooters and varmint hunters in mind. Built on the legendary 700 action, it paired a heavy barrel with deluxe woodwork, offering both benchrest-level accuracy and classic styling. Chambered here in .243 Winchester, this rifle represents one of the most versatile and enduring small-bore cartridges of the 20th century. Known for its flat trajectory and mild recoil, the .243 Win. quickly became a favorite for everything from prairie dogs and coyotes to deer and antelope, making it a perfect match for the Varmint Special’s long-range precision design.

This particular rifle, manufactured in December 1967, retains about 97% of its original bluing and shows honest field wear without compromising function or presentation. The 24” heavy barrel remains bright with sharp rifling, easily rating 9/10, ensuring accuracy for years to come. Its deluxe walnut stock, with Monte Carlo comb, cheekpiece, ebony accents, and crisp checkering, remains solid and well-fitting, showing scattered handling marks from use but no cracks or structural issues. The rifle comes topped with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x scope—a classic optic well suited for this rifle’s intended role—and is accompanied by a leather sling, making it both a ready-to-shoot hunting package and a desirable collectible.

For shooters and collectors alike, early-production BDL Varmint Specials hold a special place. Their blend of craftsmanship, utility, and historical importance within the Model 700 line make them highly sought after. This 1967 example, paired with a period Leupold scope, is a fine opportunity to acquire a rifle that remains as practical in the field as it is collectible in the safe.
