The stock shows minimal wear, with only the most minor of superficial imperfections in the stock’s finish. The finish is strong throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock fits the barreled action tightly, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Excellent condition. There is a leather sling attached to the stock.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some fouling present in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows minimal wear- there is a couple of hairline scratches on the barrel, and some operational wear on the bolt. The jeweling on the bolt remains bright and vivid. The bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads range from tooled to sharp, but all retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope and sling as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 needs little introduction — first introduced in 1962, the 700 platform quickly became the benchmark for factory bolt-action accuracy and dependable feeding. The BDL Varmint Special took that proven action and paired it with a heavy-contour 24? varmint barrel and deluxe Monte Carlo–style stock work to produce a purpose-built varmint rifle; this January 1977 BO-coded example presents those hallmarks with attractive deluxe furniture, ebony accents, and a clean, well-mounted Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5–20×50 on two-piece Weaver bases.
Chambered in .22-250 Remington — a high-velocity varmint cartridge born from a wildcat creation of the .250-3000 Savage, and brought into commercial production mid-century — this rifle is configured for flat trajectories and pinpoint varmint performance. The metal and stock present strongly, retaining roughly 98% of their original finish, the jeweling and checkering remain crisp, and the bore checks bright and measures 8.5/10 with only some fouling in the grooves; the included Simmons scope and leather sling complete a finely equipped package for accurate, long-range varmint work.
